Barebarics x BraveMenTalk: When a Conversation Can Save a Life

In November 2024, thanks to the #BraveMenTalk initiative, we managed to open a difficult topic and spark a discussion that quite literally saved human lives. And it continues to save them to this day. Hundreds of men found the courage to talk about their feelings and face their problems. Join us as we look back at how one right step led to truly meaningful change.

Barefoot as a Symbol of Mental Health

At Barebarics, we put all our energy into high quality barefoot sneakers. We develop them, improve them, and study their positive impact not only on the human body, but also on mental health. Barefoot walking stimulates nerve endings and can calm the mind, reduce stress, and improve mood. That is why in 2024 we decided to join forces with Anton Nootenboom and create the #BraveMenTalk initiative, one of the strongest campaigns focused on men’s mental health today.

Movember and Mental Health

November is globally associated with men’s health, both physical and mental. The Movember movement has long drawn attention to an alarming fact: every minute, one man dies as a result of suicide. Social stigma, pressure to perform, fear of talking about one’s own feelings. Men are still taught not to cry and not to talk about how they feel. Silence is one of the most dangerous enemies of the modern man.

One Brand, One Story, One Mission

At Barebarics, we partnered with Anton Nootenboom, known as The Barefoot Dutchman, to create a campaign that gives men the courage to speak about what is weighing them down. We created it with someone who stayed silent about his feelings for so long that he eventually found himself at rock bottom. Anton, a Dutch veteran, completed three missions in Afghanistan. After returning home, however, he faced a much stronger enemy: his own mind. He was unable to talk about his emotions, suppressed them, and gradually sank deeper. What saved him was a simple activity: walking barefoot. It brought him calm, grounding, and the strength to reflect and keep moving forward.

Anton’s Journey Across the USA: 7 Million Steps for Mental Health

260 days. 5,000 kilometers. From Los Angeles to New York. On February 17, 2024, on the beach in Santa Monica, Anton took the first step of his record breaking barefoot journey. On November 2, 2024, symbolically during the month of men’s mental health, he arrived at Times Square, where he put on the limited edition BraveMenTalk barefoot sneakers created specifically for this campaign. Along the way, he met hundreds of men, held thousands of conversations, shared hundreds of powerful thoughts, and sparked a discussion that could not be ignored. Every step was a metaphor: taking the first step toward mental health. Toward balance. Toward change.

What Has #BraveMenTalk Actually Changed?

1. We Saved Human Lives

During the campaign, men reached out to Anton and admitted that they wanted to end their lives. Conversations, videos, and personal meetings helped them take a step back. Some joined the initiative directly. Others began therapy. Many contacted organizations such as Movember, Mind, or the Brave Men Talk Foundation and started speaking openly about their problems. They asked for help.

2. Hundreds of Men Defeated Their Own Silence

Men from the USA, Europe, and other countries openly admitted for the first time in years and said: “I’m not okay.” This moment is often decisive and can quite literally save a life.

3. The Campaign Created a Community That Lives On

Community media, podcasts, discussion groups, and social media comments became safe spaces. Where there was silence not long ago, there is now conversation. And that is a hugely positive change.

4. Funds Were Raised to Help Men

Every 25 dollars raised helped one man access a suicide prevention program. The goal was 250,000 dollars, representing support for 10,000 men. A large part of this goal was successfully raised.

Barebarics Is a Socially Responsible Brand

Mental health is not just a marketing label. It is a commitment. And at Barebarics, we fulfill it through long term activities, community support, and by emphasizing the connection between movement, nature, barefoot footwear, and mental wellbeing.

Why Barefoot?

Barefoot footwear carries strong symbolic meaning: – it brings people back to natural movement and especially natural walking – it grounds – it improves mental health – movement heals both body and mind Walking barefoot or in barefoot shoes helps slow down, stay present, and reduce stress. That is why it became a key symbol of the entire initiative.

Why Must We Keep Talking About This Topic?

Because statistics do not change overnight. Because men are still dying in silence. Because open conversation is the most accessible tool of prevention. That is why November is an ideal time each year to remind ourselves that men’s mental health is not a taboo, but caring about others matters all year long. We must keep reminding ourselves that talking about our problems is a sign of courage, not weakness.

What Can All of Us Do?

–  ask others how they are really doing
– offer one another a safe space where we can openly share our struggles
– normalize conversations about men’s emotions
– remind the men around us that they are not alone

Because big changes often start with small steps.
